Event Details

Meet author Michelle Houts and learn about artist Charley Harper, Upshur County’s famous son!

There will be a family-oriented presentation, followed by  Q & A and a book signing, at the library on July 9th from 3:00 – 6:00.

Charley Harper was born in Upshur County in 1922. He spent his childhood in French Creek and Buckhannon, learning to appreciate nature and country life. World War II and art school took him around the world, but his connections to West Virginia remained strong.

Michelle Houts has written the first biography of Charley Harper, renowned mid-century modern artist. While Count the Wings: The Life and Art of Charley Harper is written with the middle-grade reader in mind, it’s loaded with both facts and artifacts that will make it a must-read for historians, naturalists, and art enthusiasts alike.
