Questions from Readers

How long does it take to write a book?

For me, writing The Beef Princess of Practical County took just a few months…. the first time. But after that, I rewrote it many, many, many times before my editor and I agreed that it was ready for printing. In fact, it was two years from the time I got the phone call saying that Random House wanted to publish the book to the time it was actually for sale on the bookstore shelves. Picture books can be written much faster, but then, it can take the artist a long time to complete the artwork.

Where do you get ideas for books?

Once when I heard well-known author/artist Patricia Polacco speak, she gave the following advice: “Write about what you know.” Now, she wasn’t the first person to say that, but she is a perfect example of someone who lives and writes by that idea. Since I live on a farm, since I work with young children, since I have a passion for nature, I find that the words come easily when I am writing about these subjects. But I do love the challenge of writing about topics that I know little about. That’s called RESEARCH!

When is your next book coming out?
